Faust Vrančić, born in Šibenik in 1551, was a Croatian polymath, linguist, inventor, diplomat, engineer, priest, and bishop. His connection to Pirovac stems from family ties and the influence that the Vrančić and Draganić families had on this town. The Draganić family, which purchased Pirovac and large amounts of land in the hinterland between 1500 and 1503, built defensive fortifications to combat the Turks and a church, thus becoming hereditary counts of Pirovac.
Faust Vrančić is best known for his inventions and technical writings, especially for his book "Machinae Novae," which contains drawings and descriptions of various constructions, including a parachute design. His work and innovations reflect the spirit of the Renaissance and humanism that was present in Europe during his lifetime. Vrančić's intellectual legacy is still present in Pirovac, where his name and achievements are valued as part of the city's cultural identity.
The significance of Faust Vrančić for Pirovac lies not only in its historical heritage but also in the inspiration it provides to future generations. The Faust Vrančić Memorial Center on the island of Prvić, near Pirovac, is dedicated to his life and work, serving as a place of learning and tribute to this giant of Croatian history and science. His connection to Pirovac continues to live on through education and the promotion of his values and achievements.
