Why Zloselo?

Pirovac, now known for its beauty and history, was once called Zloselo. This old name may seem unusual considering Pirovac's current reputation as an attractive tourist destination. According to local traditions and historical records, the name Zloselo has its roots in darker times when the place was often a target of attacks and plunder. The "Zlo" in the name Zloselo could refer to the misfortunes and suffering that the inhabitants of the village had to endure at that time. Additionally, according to some sources, this name reflects the hardships of life during that period, such as disease, poverty, and conflicts with hostile groups.

One of the most famous legends related to the old name Zloselo tells of the heroic defense of the place against Turkish occupiers. According to legend, the brave residents of Pirovac, during one of many attacks, poured boiling oil on the Turkish invaders from the fortified walls of the city at that time. This courageous act of defense contributed to the image of Zloselo as a place that successfully resisted enemies, despite all the challenges and dangers that came from outside.

Despite the negative connotations of the old name, Pirovac has managed to overcome those challenges over the centuries and transform into a peaceful and prosperous place. The name change from Zloselo to Pirovac marked a turning point in the history of this area. The name change occurred at the beginning of the 20th century when local authorities and residents decided that it was time for a new beginning and a more positive identity. The name Pirovac was chosen to reflect the new spirit of the place, its natural beauty, and friendly atmosphere.

Today, Pirovac is proud of its history and cultural heritage, including its old name Zloselo, which serves as a reminder of the challenges of the past. However, with the new name, the place has opened the doors to the future, becoming known for its hospitality, beautiful landscapes, and rich tourist offerings.
